Keystone Cops, Fatuous Fantino, A-Rod to Dunnville

The OPP proved once again that there is no limit to their incompetence, putting the run on a Caledonia man this week for selling cigarettes along a public road while allowing 'others' to continue selling smokes a short distance away. Two-tier justice is alive and well and thriving in Haldimand County. I keep waiting for one of these cops to break ranks, to come forward and admit that he or she is embarassed to be part of this sham, that he or she is ashamed to be collecting all that over-time while sitting on their asses and looking the other way. Ain't gonna happen. Hey, maybe Diane Finley will don her fake nose and glasses and drive through town again. That oughta help.

Speaking of cops, OPP head honcho Julian Fantino made the news this week, with some babble-speak about the cost of the Caledonia stand-off. Apparently Fantino blames Gary McHale for a large portion of this, ignoring the fact that his make-believe police force is the real problem. Spec columnist Susan Clairmont - not the sharpest tool in the shed - appears to agree with Fantino, who has proved himself to be a tinhorn and a huge disappointment to the people of Caledonia. He's recently written - or printed - a book about his life and his great deeds. That's all we need - another work of fiction.

The underwhelming attention A-Rod is receiving means he might very well start next season with the famed Rolling Thunder of Dunnville - my old club. With him at third, they're a cinch to win the league. But not the title, of course.

The chicken-raising season is now over. The birds have...um...gone to live on a farm in the country. Yeah, that's it.

You are wrong.

The person was not selling cigarrettes on the side of a road.

He entered privately owned property and ran like a coward when faced with charges of trespassing. He's not quite the brave soul people thought he was.

nice try though.

Doug Fleming was not on public property as you suggest. He was in fact trespassing on private property. This was clearly shown on CHCH T.V. You can even check it out on http://www.numberswatchdog.com/

And as the previous poster stated, when Fleming was confronted, he ran like a yellow coward.

The only mistake he made was not having a roadside shack....cops see a roadside smokes shack and take it to be another six nations free trade venue ;-)

BTW I don't think Flemming displayed any less cowadice in fleeing the cops than the 13 yellow rats who attempted to flee the RCMP tobacco smuggling bust in Cornwall. :-P

My compliments on a great post, Brad!

Since 'Jafo' has raised the issue of 'cowards' may I respectfully suggest that your readers check this video recorded as the brave 'Warrior,' who works at the very same smokeshop where Doug Fleming set up shop, ran like a frightened rabbit when the OPP tried to question him about trying to run down Gary McHale the week prior.

I was there when it happened, and I can tell you we all had a good laugh as this guy jumped in his Avalanche and fled through the fields to get away from the OPP.

While you're at it, here's the fax McHale sent to Fantino about how this gem of a human being tried to run him down, and how we had to track him down for the OPP.

Keep up the good work!

P.S. I've met Doug Fleming and watched him in action, and he's no coward. Anything but. He and his brother have more kahunas than most people I've met in my life, right up there with Gary McHale. Unfortunately, I couldn't be there to cover Doug's protest at the smokeshop, so I can't comment on what happened. I defy anyone to show me video, however, to prove that Doug Fleming "ran like a yellow coward." Smells like more revisionist, wishful thinking nonsense to me.

Mark.... If someone actually wanted to run down McHale, it wouldn't be too hard. After all, he's no small target. I saw the video that was posted regarding the so called "attempted murder" and all I saw was a case of "Chicken Little Syndrome".
As for Fleming, the only thing he is is a trouble maker who not only trespassed but didn't even have the "kahunas" to defend himself when the stuff was knocked out of his hand. He just stood there like a big dummy.

Personally I think Doug was very wise to just walk away when the native started roughing up his stuff. There is no doubt the OPP would have arrested Doug if he had defended himself. The native was not charged for anything. Female natives even pushed a reporter and were not charged with assault. Considering the type of people Doug was up against why would he want to go to jail. He did the right thing and refused to use violence against violence.

To Vandermaas;

The ironic thing now is that both you and McHale are seen as nothing but outside agitators and everyone knows it. Even your past supporters are now telling you both to get lost.

So anything you two say, people automatically assume the opposite to be true.

You both look like fools now.

Hey I have a question -
if you guys aren't trying to agitate things, why put in a call - using your own name - to the OPP when Doug sets up shop on 6 highway and 5th line?!

Doug was within 5 miles of the Grand River. That is Native Land. He has no right to be there.

This is directed at the owner of this blog. I just read somewhere that Gary Mchale has been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition for quite a few years and he doesn't take medication.

This changes my view on things I must say. His behaviour seems to fit his condition if this is true.

Could you not have researched McHale a little better before you blindly made judgements on Fantino? Maybe Fantino knows more than you do.

You boast about being an author so one would think you'd get to the truth before you write.

Dear "anonymous" -

Thanks for your insightful comments. Interesting to learn that you "read somewhere" that McHale has a condition. I did not research McHale's medical history because I was NOT writing about him. I was writing about Fantino, based on observations watching him on TVO, reading his comments in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and the Hamilton Spectator, as well as reading excerpts from his recently published book.
Oh - and I have never boasted about being an author. Did you "read that somewhere"?
Again - thanks for your insight.

Oh, stop the back-peddling there Mr. Smith.

You also took a swipe at Susan Clairmont by saying......oh, how'd you put it?....oh, oh, oh..here it is...."not the sharpest tool in the shed".

Such journalistic bravado!....congrats to you Mr. Smith. You're literary giant now! Feel good to bash another writer because they may know more about Fantino or what is going on in Caledonia than you do??

Fantino has a responsibility to stop agitators from coming into Caledonia whose sole purpose is ti inflame an already delicate situation.

Perhaps you should refrain from just parroting the rhetoric of McHale and think for yourself in the future and actually research things. Writers and authors have a higher standard of responsibility when they speak and one of those responsibilities is to get their facts straight first and do their own research. Did you not know that or do you just repeat unfounded gossip??

And if you don't think Gary McHale and Mark Vandermaas and their group of sheep aren't professional agitators hoping to cash in and relieve you all of your hard earned money because they don't want to get a real job, you'd better look at this website they own. And study the website carefully.

Fantino knows about this Mr. Smith. Did you?

Paste this into your browser and take a peek.

Oh, please.

A newspaper that has done no decent research or reportage on such an explosive, local issue has no business even calling itself a paper. Clairmont, amongst others, is too much of an apologist on this entire issue, and that's not doing her job.

Frankly, I give more credence to anyone living and affected by this crap than outside agitator, fly-by reporter or coiffed talking head on any TV station.

And especially to anyone who takes cowardly, personal potshots under the name 'anonymous'.

Dear Annonymous-

do you get your panties in a bunch for other causes as well? i think some direction to your outbursts might find a constructive outlet elsewhere... may i suggest perhaps global warming? famine? war?hiv/aids? or maybe... life outside southern ontario?

grow yourself some courage and fight the urge to post annonymous insults to people like a coward.

What an interesting stream of comments! Fleming is certainly attracting attention and making a point as do Vandermaas and McHale. Maybe shit has to be stirred up to make things happen. But it also rocks the town and can lead to confrontation. And Christmas is coming plus more smoke shack shennigans.
People remain disappointed with OPP. Some don't even look at them any more. It's like they are not there to them.
With regard to Clairmont - others think she can be off the mark too. Her columns contain personal comment grounded in her personal agenda.
And Brad Smith is a good writer, does lots of research (read a book of his to find out) and is well versed in matters local and provincial. I'm sure the stones thrown at him bounced back without leaving any marks.
